In 2017, my little sister, Nicole, gifted me Tupac's book, The Rose that Grew from Concrete, and it changed my life. Previously, I only knew Tupac as a rapper, but I didn't know he was also a poet, activist, and humanitarian. That book ended up sparking my passion for poetry and I started off with love. I would spend nights at the local cafe writing, but I eventually realized I was one-dimensional as a writer so I decided to branch out. I read poets who shared the same experiences as me, poets who gave insight on different experiences, read about heartbreak, identity, masculinity, growth, and everything you can name. My work is a culmination of what inspires me and who I love, fear, admire, and try to understand.
